Canyon Raceway

March 5, 2005

The Arizona Modified Midget Association started the 2005 season on a cloudy, cold Saturday night at Canyon Raceway. Twenty 600cc Modified Midgets checked into the pits for the first points race, along with seven 250cc cars. Chad Boat started Heat Race #2 on the inside of Row 2 and was running 2nd at the end of Lap 1. Ashley Roebella, with a brand new car, started on the pole and led all 8 laps to win her first heat race. Chad closed in on the #91 car of Ashley but wasn’t able to make the pass and finished in the 2nd position.

Chad lined up in the 5th position on the inside of Row 3 for the start of the scheduled 25-lap Main Event. As Lap 2 was completed, Michael Colegrove, who had started on the pole, had taken the lead and Chad was already running in the 2nd position, when the yellow flag flew for a spin by 2 cars on the track. Chad had to move back to the 3rd position on the restart, but the 2nd place car of Ashley Roebella brought out another yellow on the restart, and Chad moved back into the 2nd position.

On Lap 4 Chad made a move to the inside of Colegrove coming out of Turn 3 and took the lead. With the 250cc cars running a combined Main Event with the 600 cc cars, Chad caught lapped traffic by Lap 6. Chad made his way through the lapped traffic and built up a good lead over Colegrove when another yellow flag waved as the drivers got the half way signal from the flagman.

With the field able to close in because of the yellow flag, Chad was able to maintain his lead on the restart, but only a few laps were completed before another yellow flag flew for another car spinning out. After several more restart attempts, and several more yellow flags, the track officials shortened the race to 20-laps. Chad got good restarts and pulled away from the field to win the first points race of the season for the AMMA.

In the winner’s circle, Chad thanked his crew for giving his an awesome race car. He said that it was a new car and they weren’t sure how it was going to work, but it was just as good as the one he had so much success with last year.
